The 50th anniversary of the United Church of Christ will be celebrated all over the country this weekend, but nowhere more than at Bethany Church in Randolph. Bethany and its pastor/composer Kathy Eddy plan a festival service at the 10 a.m. worship in recognition of the milestone. Coming to Randolph to deliver the Sunday sermon will be Frederick Buechner, one of America’s best-known theologians, the author of more than 20 books of both fiction and non-fiction. One of his novels, "Godric," was nominated for a Pulitzer prize. His first book, "A Long Day’s Dying," was written while a student at Princeton, drawing from his two years of service in World War II prior to entering college. The Sunday service will also be another opportunity to hear music by Rev. Eddy, whose latest composition will be premiered the previous evening, sung by the noted Hilliard Ensemble of London. Eddy’s music will include a prelude for brass quintet, an anthem with soloist, children’s voices, and brass, a call to worship and offertory piece, both also for brass. |
