Vermont Artist Sabra Field Gives Talk at Chandler Gallery Celebrated Vermont artist Sabra Field will present an illustrated gallery talk Sunday, Nov. 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the Chandler Gallery on Main St. in Randolph, as part of the current Chandler exhibit, "Leaving a Lasting Impression." The evening will also include the unveiling of Chandler’s Centennial poster which features one of Field’s iconic images of Vermont, entitled "Strawberry Moon." She will sign copies of the poster at the event. Field will discuss her life as an artist and printmaker, framed by the life-sized self portrait print that is now on display at Chandler Gallery. She likes to say that she was born in a tiny building on the Middlebury campus in Joe Ablow’s Renaissance art course. Responding to a piece by Piero della Francesca, she says she understood that great art is composed from what we see but it is not a replica of what we see. Field had her next epiphany discovering "The Language of Vision" by Gyorgy Kepes, who "understood the interrelatedness of visual phenomena in all places and at all scales, who saw meaning and beauty in the humble bubble pattern." During the same period, Field was introduced to the ancient technology of woodblock printing. She says, "I’ve never fallen out of love with my medium, only added to it the new technology of Iris ink jet to which I’ve been fortunate to gain access by living long enough." One of Field’s Iris print series, Metaphore I and II, is on display at Chandler, giving the viewer the opportunity to share her enthusiasm for this new technology where she says "the changes possible are limitless, which can be daunting but is also thrilling." Field’s inspirational talks combine her personal philosophy and her beloved images in an evening of art and reflection. "I’ve reached the time of life artists dream of: a few commissions, sales of reproduction rights, a lot of time to think and dream and invent new images while I still have the strength and energy to make them come true," Field says. The community is also invited to participate in Chandler’s printmaking exhibit by signing up for November 3 workshops in relief printing or digital photography.
