Roger Walvoord

WILLISTON—Roger C. Walvoord, died October 10, 2007 of pancreatic cancer at home in the sunroom he loved. Born in Atwater, Ohio, he was a graduate of Ohio State University and served in World War II as a corporal in the United States Army Air Force, assigned to teach electronics to those who failed the Army tests. He studied briefly at the University of Chicago.

Growing up in Edinburg, Ohio on a small farm, he loved farm life and studied agriculture in college. He worked for Ohio’s Extension Service, helping farmers solve multiple problems. During his work years, he worked for AO Smith Harvestors in Ohio and California, and finished out his work years judging beef for Ohio Meat Packers.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Inabel Mayhew, and a sister, Rose Anne Hastings of Orleans.

Survivors include his wife of 10 years, Doris Porter (Cooley) Walvoord; a brother, Wilbur of Sabina, Ohio; a sister, Dr. Margaret Steele of Sanoma, Calif.; a son, Thomas Walvoord of Cherry Hills, N.J.; twin daughters, Rebecca Valley and Kathy Curtis of Cincinnati, Ohio; five grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was known for his bass voice and sang solos for many years. He enjoyed golf, until unable to play; and was active on the computer, studying the stock market with considerable success. With his wife, he played the organ and sang. A firm believer in actions rather than words, he cared for his Vermont friends and loved his adopted state.
