Rumor is that Nico Muhly, a 26-year-old composer with Randolph roots, will be included in a special issue of Smithsonian Magazine, "America’s Young Innovators in the Arts and Sciences: 37 under 36." The issue is due October 16. Muhly was born and spent much of his childhood in Randolph, where his music education began with piano lessons from the well-known Randolph piano teacher Florence Cushman. Muhly’s music, which draws on minimalism and early choral music, began to receive national attention while he was still a student at the Juilliard School in New York (he also attended Columbia University). Since graduating in 2004, Muhly’s work has been performed at Carnegie Hall and the Whitney Museum, and received positive reviews from publications like the New York Times. Muhly has worked with innovative music legends from Philip Glass to Bjork, and conducted the Opera de Paris. His piece "A Hudson Cycle" was recently performed as the finale of the season opener at the Chandler Music Hall. |
