‘Suck It Up’
On Complaints

A much belated "bravo" to the folks constructing the Main Street bridge.

It annoys me that it took some whiners in last weeks' Herald to make me speak up about how much I appreciate the pace in which the bridge project seems to be coming along. Good work!

What I've noticed about tie-ups is that the other travelers and the traffic control people are courteous in spite of the inconvenience. Even though some days it feels like big city congestion, I have felt the quiet acceptance of my fellow Vermonters as we've taken turns weaving our way through the streets.

I have a Prince Street business. We have been forced to close our windows on beautiful days to keep out the incessant grunts of construction vehicles, the clanging of metals, the beeps of rigs in reverse. Often we could not hear ourselves speak while on the phone with customers. Our water has been shut off for hours at a time.

The "under the bridge" section of Prince Street will be closed until June of 2008, forcing me to "go around" for the next eight months. An employee was 30 minutes late last week, having been stuck in line way back near the Farm Stand. Not only that, my dog is afraid of the bridge construction, so we have to go out of our way to cross the river at the playground!

My point: So what?

The new bridge is for the good of everyone and sometimes we need to suck it up a little. Get over it.
