The Hornets boys’ team has been in the cellar since their season-opening loss to Rochester. This was followed by home losses to Twinfield and TSA and road losses to South Royalton and Chelsea. They have just been waiting for the that "taste of victory"…well, "the wait is finally over" and "good things come to those who wait" has never been truer than in the case of the Whitcomb boy’s soccer season. The team has shown a marked improvement in the win column going from 0-5 to 3-5 after posting their first victory of the season in Bethel on Friday, Sept. 21 against the Craftsbury Chargers. An upset win over the Rochester Rockets, on Tuesday, Sept. 25 followed and a second home victory over the Cabot Huskies continued last Friday. With the sudden departure of first-year coach Mike Crane the Hornets are flourishing under the guidance of former Hornet cager Sean Davis and Winslow Ayer, father of current Hornet Chris Kerr-Ayer, with each assuming head coach and assistant coach positions, respectively. Along with the coaching change is the addition of German foreign exchange student Clemens Garve, who has brought prominence to the team as well as leadership and ability that has enabled the team to regroup and emerge as a huge threat to their remaining opponents. Add to this the fact that Clemens has emerged the leading scorer with nine of the eleven Hornet tallies this season and you have a whole new Hornet composite. Win Over Chargers In the contest against Craftsbury, the German standout posted the "hat trick," scoring three of the four goals the Hornets netted in the 4-1 victory. At 5:46, Peter Bergos got things started when he passed the ball to Clemens for the first goals of the game, giving the Hornets the never-ending lead. Clemens delivered the orb into the strings at 26:02 for the second Hornet tally and 2-0 Whitcomb advantage. Dan Noel scored the third goal unassisted at 18:30 of the second half, before Clemens finished with a goal at 39:21. Craftsbury erased the shut-out bid at 9:46 before Whitcomb cruised to their first win at the whistle. Joel Wright had 18 saves in the contest. Garve Scores 4 in Win In the Rochester game, described as "a real good contest," it was another standout performance by Garve, who fired in all four Hornet tallies in the 4-3 upset win. Tanner Haskins had two goals for the Rockets and Quique Murray scored the other goal for a 3-3 halftime score. Garve’s fourth deposit in the second half earned the Hornets the upset. Win Over Cabot The Cabot game was another excellent outing with both teams making some great stops. It took almost 3 minutes before anybody hit pay dirt, but it wasn’t for lack of trying on either side. Unfortunately, it was the Huskies who got the look and then the score at 11:15, putting the Hornets in a come-from-behind mode and that’s just what they did. It was another hat trick for Garve in the tie/go-ahead/insurance win. At 31:31, Whitcomb tied the game and both teams were deadlocked going into the break. At 28:07, Whitcomb took the lead when Peter Bergos assisted Garve, and just 27 seconds later at 28:35 he scored the final tally of the game. Husky Trevor Bannister made 12 saves in the contest and Joel Wright made 13. Freshmen Lloyd Flint, Brandon Kendall, Matt Prucha and Sam Taylor were outstanding in the game, with all four making some crucial stops and kicks that halted Cabot’s forward assault when it appeared that they were in better positions than the Hornets. Whitcomb travels to Plainfield today to face the Twinfield Trojans and hosts the Williamstown Blue Devils at 11:00 this Saturday. ___________ |
