Alfred Waterson

TUNBRIDGE—Alfred H. "Al" Waterson, 73, died Friday, Sept. 28, 2007, at his home on Ward Hill Road. He was born July 26, 1934, in Waterbury, Conn., the son of Joseph W. and Louise (Beerbaum) Waterson.

He attended school in Connecticut before his family moved to Rapid City, S.D., where he graduated from high school.

On September 3, 1977, he married Joanna Gardner of Hartland, and they lived most of their married life in Tunbridge.

Known as "Country Al," he was a radio announcer in South Dakota before moving to Vermont, where he worked for WNHV in White River and later WCVR in Randolph. In 1980 he was named the top country announcer on the East Coast and while at WNHV, he co-hosted the early morning "Charlie Kelton Show." Most recently, he worked as a courier at Green Mountain Messenger in West Lebanon, N.H.

He enjoyed working on old cars, going to classic car shows, going for coffee with friends, and talking politics. He was quick with a joke, had a great memory and was an avid Red Sox fan.

Survivors include his wife of Tunbridge; a son, Brian Waterson of Westby, Wisc.; two step-sons, Thomas Morris of Tunbridge and Joseph Morris of Camphill, Penna.; two step-daughters, Shelly Sturtevant of Hartland and Dorinda Pillsbury of Peru, Maine; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.

He was predeceased by a brother, Stanley Waterson; and two sisters, Rhita Langston and Lois Neal.

There were no public calling hours. A graveside service took place Wednesday, Oct. 3, at the Highland Cemetery in Chelsea.

The Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home on Main Street, in Chelsea was in charge of the arrangements.
