Lady Hornets Break Even
By Laurie-Jean B. Gauthier

The Whitcomb Lady Hornets are having their ups and downs this season as they attempt to return to the championship game. With back-to-back road losses to the D-III South Royalton Royals in a 1-0 shutout loss on Tuesday, Sept. 18 and then a 3-1 loss to the Chelsea Red Devils last Thursday, the Hornets find themselves lagging in the win column with a 2-3 record.

In a contest that coach Gary Zisselsberger described as "a very good game," it was the Royals who were finally able to find the back of the net after more than 65-plus minutes when Jackie Bowen scored at 13:3. It was also a game that has put the Hornets down to no subs with an injury to Allison Richards.

In the Chelsa game a lone Molly Taylor/Brittany Flint goal kept the Red Devils without a shutout-victory, but a victory nevertheless as the Upham girls, Kim and Michele, both scored, one and two respectively, with Michele assisting Kim on the first goal, and Robyn Kennedy and Althea Spencer assisting Michele with her two deposits.

Win Over Chargers

On Friday, Sept. 21 Whitcomb got their legs back and trounced their guests, the Craftsbury Chargers, 7-zip for their third victory of the season. Molly Taylor proved to be unstoppable as she scored goals one, two and three unassisted for a first-half hat trick.

In the second half Emily Durfee stared the scoring with unassisted goal four. Goal five was another Taylor deposit assisted by Tia McKenna. Virginia Wortman scored the sixth goal of the game with help from Flint before Flint finished the Hornet tally with an unassisted seventh goal.

The win puts Whitcomb at .500 for the season. Whitcomb (girls only) plays at Cabot tomorrow and hosts Sharon (Girls only) on Tuesday, Oct. 2.

Hornet boys host Cabot and travel to Sharon on the same days.
