SOUTH RANDOLPH—Emerson Dearing Strickland, 91, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2007, in the Garden Room at Gifford Medical Center in Randolph. He was born November 5, 1915, in South Randolph, the son of George William and Caroline (Dearing) Strickland. He attended school in South Randolph and graduated in 1934 from Randolph High School. In 1935 he graduated from the Vermont School of Agriculture in Randolph Center. On December 6, 1942 he married Marguerite Sheldon of Chester. They lived all their married life in South Randolph. He helped his father on their Jersey dairy farm until he took over the farm in 1949. He sold his cows in 1965. In the 1970s, he worked five years as head gardener at the Quechee Lakes Corp. in Quechee. He later worked as a custodian at Vermont Technical College in Randolph Center, and at WCVR radio station in Randolph. He liked working in the fall at Allen’s Cider Mill in Chelsea. He enjoyed Jersey cattle and gardening and loved horses and building fences. Survivors include Marguerite, his wife of 64 years, of South Randolph; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his son, John Strickland; and two brothers, Alton Strickland and Charles Strickland. Visiting hours with the family will be Thursday, Sept. 27, at Emerson and Marguerite’s home, 3567 Vt. Route 14 in South Randolph, from 4 to 7 p.m. There will be no public funeral service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Garden Room Fund, in care of Gifford Medical Center, PO Box 2000, Randolph, Vt., 05060. The Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home on Main Street in Chelsea is in charge of the arrangements. ____________ |
