David Hannah, a 6’4" basketball guard, has made the cut for the Vermont Frost Heaves for the 2007-08 season. Hannah was a huge high school star and distinguished himself in college sports as well. Hannah was a two-time all-state selection at Randolph Union High School and wound up his career there as the Galloping Ghosts’ all-time leading scorer with 1,314 points.
After graduation in 1999, Hannah went on to St. Lawrence Uni-versity, where, as a three-year starter, he led the Saints in three-point shooting and was named all-conference. He was also a goalie for SLU’s 1999 NCAA Division III championship soccer team.
"What impresses me most about David is his perseverance," said Frost Heaves coach Will Voigt. "He was the only player from last year’s tryout to come back this summer. You could tell that he really wanted to be on this team and had worked hard to prepare. That kind of attitude makes him a great asset to this team."
"It’s been my boyhood dream to play pro basketball," said Hannah. "Making the squad this time around has made this that much more special to me. I’ll represent this state to the best of my ability, and hope to show the true grit and desire of the Vermont athlete. My personal goals will be to make the Top 12 to be eligible for home games, and eventually work my way up to the Top 10 for traveling. That may seem far-fetched at first, but I once thought that making the team was far-fetched."
Hannah’s high school basketball coach Bruce Viens said, "I’m glad for Dave. I think it’s great, he’s paid his dues. He did a great job for us and then for St. Lawrence, and that is an outstanding league. It will be great for Central Vermonters to be able to go see David play again."
The Frost Heaves open their season on November 9 at Montreal. Once again, they will split their 18 home games evenly between Barre and Burlington, with their Barre opener scheduled for Thursday night, Nov. 15, and Burlington debut set for Sunday afternoon, Nov. 18.
Hannah’s dad, John, had this to say about his son’s playing with the Frost Heaves: "I think it’s an excellent opportunity for David. I think this will help him develop both physically and academically. David is enrolled in a masters program that will lead to licensing for work with young adults with emotional problems and this will give him some great credibility. I think David is very excited and he really wanted to play at this level. He has worked very, very hard to stay in shape and to change his playing style. He worked on it all year and it made the difference."
