Mildred R. Riley

BARRE—Mildred R. Riley, 82, died Thursday, September 13, 2007, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

Born on October 13, 1924 in Brookfield, she was the daughter of Wesley C. and Agnes (Bjorn) Rumney. She attended school in Brookfield, Spaulding High School in Barre, and graduated from Randolph High School in 1941.

On July 1, 1951, she married Robert H. Riley in Northfield. They always made their home in Barre. He died on January 14, 1995.

For 17 years, she worked at the Wayside Restaurant on the Barre-Montpelier Road and later, for 21 years, she worked for the former Howe Dry Cleaners in Barre.

She was a member of the Brookfield Congregational Church, and a past member of the Order of the Eastern Star #18 in Northfield and the American Legion Post #10 Auxiliary in Barre. She enjoyed knitting, bingo and playing cards with her senior group in East Barre, and going for rides in the country.

Survivors include her son, Robert John Riley and his wife, Linda, of Lake Placid, Fla.; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a brother, Wesley L. Rumney and his wife, Irene, of Barre; nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, and by two sisters, Lucille Briggs and Doris Hopfinger.

A graveside service was held Monday, Sept. 17 at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Washington, Vt. There were no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice, 600 Granger Road, Barre, Vt. 05641.

The Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre was in charge of arrangements.
