Gov. Jim Douglas helped feed Randolph’s housebound seniors last week by handing out some Meals-On-Wheels himself.
He arrived at the Greater Randolph Senior Center just before the Wednesday Stagecoach bus, which delivers the meals for the center Mondays through Thursdays.
The kitchen staff, chef Rose Olmstead and volunteer Jane Tousignant, had already cooked and packed the meals in the special containers that keep them hot.
For those who are too limited by age to come to the center for their meals, the program offers a chance to have a homemade, hot meal at least once a day. On Thursday, the Center packs frozen meals so that everyone can have one a day over the weekend, too.
Some of those in the Randolph, Randolph Center, Brookfield, and Braintree areas are too far for the Stagecoach to deliver, so volunteers fill the gap, sometimes driving 36 miles in a single day to feed those who have difficulty leaving their houses.
Center Director Anne Brandon said that Gov. Douglas rode with The Stagecoach for three stops, speaking with all the recipients about the program.
"He was a great listener, too," Brandon added. "We had to drag him away.
The public can do its part to help out the Meals on Wheels program this week. The center is holding a lasagna dinner this Friday, Sept. 21, with two seatings, one at 5 and one at 6:30, to support Meals on Wheels. It has been providing in-house and other meals for seniors, as well as social and educational events, for 35 years.
