Gal Ghosts

Start Slow

By Hannah Becker

The Randolph Lady Ghosts Varsity soccer season started slow when the first game was cancelled due to thunderstorms. The home game vs. Union-32 has been rescheduled for Monday, Sept. 17 at 4:30. The Ghosts are now three games into the season with a win at home vs. Northfield, a home loss against Mill River, and a loss at Spaulding.

Win vs Northfield

The Lady Ghosts were excited to begin their season against a strong Northfield squad on September 5. The Ghosts started out slow in the first half, taking no shots. But Northfield wasn’t able to capitalize. The half ended with the game tied at 0-0.

The ladies were still in it and they came out strong in the second half and played aggressively. After an injury on the field with 26:30 left the Ghosts had the benefit of a direct kick outside the 18. Senior Holly Mugford took the kick and placed the ball into the net. The ghosts led 1-0. But seven minutes later Laura Ostrout of Northfield dribbled through the Randolph defense, shot, scored, and tied the game 1-1. Randolph fought hard and had many offensive chances, and they were able to keep Northfield at bay. With 12:59 left senior Erika Smith scored the go-ahead goal for Randolph on a cross by Mugford. The Ghosts kept Northfield off for the remainder of the game and walked away with a 2-1 victory. Arielle Connolly was in goal the first half with four saves and Erica Webber played the second half with three saves.

Loss to Mill River

The Gal Ghosts’ second game of the season was a hot one. Randolph didn’t let the temperature get them down, and they came out hard in the first half taking seven shots, but never getting the ball into the net. The Randolph defense was also strong in the first half, allowing only two shots from visiting Mill River. The half ended with the game tied 0-0.

Randolph came out slow in the second half. Amanda Lee of Mill River scored only :31 seconds into the game. But after that the Ghosts tightened their defense and were aggressive once again. The Ghosts’ offense was a force again in the second half, taking seven shots un- fortunately, Randolph couldn’t finish the job, and they walked off with a tough 1-0 loss.

Connolly played the first half in goal, making one save, and Erika Webber played the second half with four saves.

The JV team tied 0-0 after a double overtime.

Loss to Spaulding

It was a wet one for the Ghosts on September 11 when they traveled to Spaulding High School. The weather put somewhat of a dud on the Ladies as they started the game slowly. Taking only two shots in the half, the girls were a step behind Spaulding. With about 20 minutes into the game Randolph started to pick it up. They were aggressive and were offensive minded. However, with 15:05 left in the first half M. Shipman of Spaulding scored. The Ghosts’ defense was tight, letting in only the one goal on 8 shots. The half ended with the Ghosts trailing 1-0. Randolph came out in the second half hungry for a goal. They were more offensive-minded taking four shots in the half, but they couldn’t keep Spaulding back, as they took seven shots. The Ghosts weren’t able to convert their shots into goals and the game ended with the Ladies losing 1-0. Connolly and Webber combined for 10 saves in net.

The JV team lost its match 7-0.

The Gal Ghosts play again on Friday, Sept. 14, at home against Harwood. They would appreciate your support.
