Shirley Garland

NORTH RANDOLPH—Shirley I. Garland, 84, of Houston, Texas, formerly of Randolph, died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2007 at the Houston Hospice in Houston, Texas.

She was born February 13, 1923 in Adelaide, South Australia, the daughter of Bert and Irene (Jones) Fishlock. She attended Adelaide schools, and graduated from Norwood Technical School in Norwood, So. Australia, and Charters Business College.

She married Nelson F. Garland March 12, 1942 in Sydney, Australia. They moved to Bedford, Mass. in 1943, then to North Randolph from Ramsey, N.J. in 1970. He died in 1996.

She moved to Houston in 2003. She had owned and operated Garland Bookstore for 12 years, and was a volunteer at Chandler Music Hall in Randolph. She was a member of the East Randolph Firehall Committee, and enjoyed reading, gardening, family and friends.

Survivors include her sons, Bruce Garland of Houston, Texas and Philip Garland of Bradford; a daughter, Carol Butler of Barre; a brother, Richard Fishlock of Adelaide, So. Australia; a sister, Yvonne Little of Victor Harbor, So. Australia; and eight grandchildren.

Her son, Alan, of Knots Island, N.C., predeceased her in 2005.

Private family services will be held in September at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph Center. There are no calling hours.
