Montpelier Legion Team
Boast 7 Randolph Players
By Cody Montgomery

The Montpelier Legion Post 3 team has started out 1-3 in league games so far this year. Playing from Randolph are, Tim Grandy, Calvin Russell, Simon Kribstock, Mike Czok, Cody Montgomery, Thomas Jacobs, and David Maxfield.

After losing two close games to Waterbury to start the season, Post 3 traveled down to South Royalton to take on Post 51 last Thursday. Post 3 took the contest home handily, 17-1 after five innings. Eli Sherman (Montpelier) went the distance for Post 3, and Tyler Baker (Northfield), Mike Czok, Tim Grandy, Rob Kene (U-32), all had big hits in the contest. Mike Butryman, Dustin Parker and Jordan White split the pitching duties up for Post 51.

Loss to Addison

Post 3 traveled to Middlebury College on Saturday to take on Addison county in a nine-inning affair. They lost 13-2 after a nine-run seventh inning by Addison. Addison scored two runs in the fifth, and Post 3 came back and tied the game with two of their own. Thomas Jacobs squeeze bunted Grandy home from third to knot the game at two runs apiece after Grandy got on with a liner for the left side of the plate. Grandy threw a gem, pitching to the seventh before being relieved by Calvin Russell. Russell pitched the final two innings. Baker had a double for Post 3.

Double Header

Montpelier also had a non-league doubleheader against the Champlain Edge. They split the games, with Post 3 taking the first, 12-5. Cody Montgomery took the hill for Post 3 and scattered eight hits over seven innings. Down 2-0 in the third, Post 3 loaded the bases with no outs. Mike Czok drove the ball to deep center, where it was caught, but plenty deep enough for Mitch Thresher (Northfield) to score. Then with two on, Jacobs lined one to left field to score two to put Montpelier out ahead by one. Keene followed that up with a double to plate Jacobs.

In the next frame, Travis Taylor (Northfield) pounded the ball over the right field fence to increase the lead to four, 6-2 over the Champlain Edge.

Post 3 added two more in the fifth inning , and four more in the sixth, with two coming off of Zack LeBlanc’s (Twinfield) double to left-center. The final two came off of a Thresher double down the left-field line.

In the second game, Montpelier lost in an unusually high scoring game, 27-12. Grandy went two for three, with hits from both sides of the plate, Thresher and Jacobs had doubles, Taylor had a triple, Colin Arisman (Montpelier) had a pair of hits, Montgomery had an RBI single, and Czok had three RBIs.

Montpelier Post 3 plays at Hartford on Thursday, at the Mountaineers field against Champlain Saturday, and again at home versus the OEC Kings in a doubleheader Sunday. Games start at 1 p.m.
