The house has gone missing, but the fireplace still works fine.

Joe Maihiot enjoys the warmth on one of thes week’s cooler days at what used to be his Route 73 camp in the midst of the Green Mountain Forest between Rochester and Brandon.

The original camp was moved to the site from Killington by horses in 1931. It decayed and was finally partially burned about four years ago.

Drivers on Route 73 over those last years watched as bit by bit the debris was picked up until only the handsome stone chimney and its fireplace remained.

Mailhiot told Herald photographer Bob Eddy that he plans to rebuild. In the meantime, he plans to stay warm.
