The Library And
Mr. Biederman

Charlie Biederman was a true friend of the Rochester Public Library. Whether he was donating books or presenting programs, you could count on him to see what was needed and to volunteer to help. The epitome of professionalism and courtesy as a selectboard member, Charlie facilitated the creation of a closer working relationship with the town library, and he made sure the library was properly maintained as a town building.

If I was having a stressful day at work, I could count on a kind word and reassurance of a job well done from Charlie if he stopped in to pick up a book. The library is a better place because of his efforts.

Last month, when Charlie visited the library, he asked to go upstairs to see the work that had recently been completed on the prominent stained glass window. He admired the window and the beautifully restored space that had been created for both the Rochester Hisorical Society and for public programs.

We talked about the need for a fire escape from the second floor in order to safely utilize the building. When Charlie left, he had made up his mind to make sure a fire escape was built.

Now the Biederman family has named the library as one of the organizations through which friends may honor Charlie with memorial gifts. Contributions will be put toward the design and construction of the fire escape.

Charlie loved the library and I loved Charlie. I am a better person for having known a man of such wisdom, sound judgment, grace, and selflessness.  I am honored to have been his friend. Thank you, Carol, for sharing him with the Library, the town, the valley, and the world....
