Law School Awarded $25K
To Rework Energy Laws

The Windham Foundation recently awarded nine Vermont non-profit organizations $93,500 in grants, including $25,000 bequests to Vermont Law School and Brattleboro Memorial Hospital.

The grant to Vermont Law School will support a project by the Environmental Law Center to draft new energy law for the state.

The project will be a joint effort by two center entities—the Institute for Energy and the Environment and the Land Use Institute—"to research and draft new legislation to amend state law that guides the utility planning process, the electrical facility siting process, and Act 250 permitting," a VLS spokesperson said.

"Our grants to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital and Vermont Law School are unusually large for our program, but we felt they deserved our involvement," said Stephan Morse, Windham Foundation President and CEO.

"As the supply of electric energy in Vermont is in danger, we are pleased to play a small role in aiding Vermont Law School which is working to address the issue and to plan for Vermont’s future," Morse continued.

Windham Foundation, headquartered in Grafton, is an exempt foundation whose mission is to undertake and support historic restoration and preservation in Vermont, as well as to develop projects and support charities to benefit the welfare of Vermonters.

One of the ways it supports this mission is through its grants program.

Every quarter, grants are awarded to non-profit organizations, primarily in the areas of social services, the arts, and education, with active programs that focus on the needs and quality of life in Vermont, its citizens and its communities.

Since its inception, the Foundation has provided more than $10 million in funding to hundreds of non-profits across Vermont.

Other projects funded this cycle include:

• The Foodbank Farm, which provides healthy local food for low-income Vermonters and offers food and nutrition education.

• An initiative by Vermont Historical Society to do training and networking to increase the impact of the Community History Partnership.

The Windham Foundation is the parent company of The Old Tavern, Grafton Village Cheese Company, and the Grafton Village Nursery in Grafton, and the Retreat Farm in Brattleboro.

As an operating foundation, it uses much of the annual income from the subsidiaries to fund charitable programs. For more information, visit www.windham-foundation.org.
