Last year Montpelier defeated and knocked the Chelsea girls lacrosse squad out of the semi-finals in girls’ tournament action, but last Friday the Devils rallied past the Solons and came away with a 10-4 win. Within the first few minutes of the game Montpelier charged the goal, sending two quick shots to the back of the net. But Chelsea wasn’t ready to lose and retaliated with five straight goals. The Solons knocked in another goal and Chelsea knocked in one more before the half to send the teams into the break, Chelsea ahead, 6-3. The second half began with Chelsea coming out strong and dominating the field. Chelsea played a clean passing game. The Lady Devils possessed the ball for the remainder of the second half after building their lead to 10-3. Chelsea’s second half goalie Laura Upham and her defensive crew almost had a second half shut-out, but a shooting space violation gave the Solons one more chance to score with one second left in the game. At the final horn Chelsea took the 10-4 win. Chelsea/Burr & Burton Chelsea took the long bus ride to Manchester, to play powerhouse Burr & Burton last Saturday. Chelsea had limited warm-up time and jumped right into the game. Burr & Burton stormed their defense and scored a quick goal. Chelsea’s Sam Bonasera answered with a shot of her own. But that was as close as the game would get as Burr & Burton’s quick stick skills and long passes dominated, keeping Chelsea’s defense hard at work. The game broke for halftime with Burr & Burton leading 7-1. The second half played out similarly to the first half, but Chelsea picked up their defense with Laura Upham holding strong in the goal. Burr & Burton’s defense restrained Chelsea from conducting plays and running their offense, but Bonasera raced up the field to score the Devils’ second goal late in the second half. The final score was a 14-2 loss for Chelsea. Kristen Palmer was Burr & Burton’s high scorer with five goals and Marie VanDerKar scored four for the Bulldogs. Upham had 10 saves for the Red Devils. Chelsea/St. Johnsbury Chelsea traveled to St. Johnsbury Tuesday, May 15, and came home with a 12-9 win. Chelsea’s Kim Upham scored the first goal of the game within minutes. Chelsea’s defense came out to a slow start, enabling St. Johnsbury to put in three goals before Chelsea struck again. The Lady Devils fought their way back for the remainder of the first half with Hillary Bonasera and Olivia Conner pushing the ball to the net. With the game tied 5-5 at the beginning of the second half, Chelsea stepped it up when Conner gained control of the ball and scored a goal within seconds to take Chelsea’s first lead of the game. Chelsea never looked back and went on to score three more goals before St. Johnsbury answered. Chelsea slowed the ball down and dominated the game for the remainder of the second half. St. Johnsbury slipped through Chelsea’s defense to score four more times, but the Red Devils halted their hopes of a win. Lindsey Smith played keeper for Chelsea, as injuries and lack of substitutes has struck the Devils. Playing goalie for the first time in two years Smith had eight saves in goal. Upham was Chelsea’s high scorer with four goals; H. Bonasera, Conner and S. Bonesera had two goals each. Althea Spencer and Mary Childs each tallied one apiece. Chelsea’s record improves to 6-2 and they will host undefeated Randolph Friday, May 18, at 4:30. ____________ |
