Horrific Crash Barely Avoided

I’m not one to write letters to the editor, but this is one I have to.

Spring is here and so is speed. On May 2, at approximately 7:40 p.m., I was traveling south on Route 100 just north of Hancock, when I was almost forced off the road by a northbound white sedan, passing another dark colored car on a curve. Both cars were traveling at a high rate of speed.

After gathering myself and thinking what could have happened, I can’t let this lie. If anything, maybe someone will read this and know the people involved. We were all very fortunate that the passing car was able to jerk the car back to the correct side of the road. If not, it would have been a horrific accident that would have left the Valley with several casualties, including, no doubt, myself, a wife, a daughter and a mother of two sons.

My husband and I have dealt with speed issues with our children. If someone informed us of any incident, we tell them about the consequences of hurting or killing others and to obey the laws and always wear their seatbelts.

Were these cars racing, fooling around, who knows but them? Apparently the drivers must have fallen asleep during drivers-ed or didn’t notice the yellow line on the curve they were passing on. Will the people involved in last night’s near-fatal accident read this? Probably not! It always happens somewhere in Vermont around graduation, someone dies because of senseless acts like this.

This isn’t the first time I have witnessed speed on the roads in the Valley. Warmer weather seems to bring them out in hordes. Just remember the roads you travel on are a public highway system we all have to use. Be respectful of others on the road. Obey the laws on the speed limits. If you can’t, then join the NASCAR circuit and stay off our public highways!
