The Randolph varsity girls lacrosse team ended the 2006 season with the seventh seed in Division II. The season ended quickly for the Ghosts when 10th seeded Burlington defeated them in the first round of the playoffs. High expectations have been set for this season with 18 returning players and four freshmen. "There is a very good core of returning, experienced players," said coach Sheligha Smith Banks. "I’m very optimistic that we can move up in our ranking. This is going to be a good year." Home vs. Hartford The Gal Ghosts defeated Hartford 6-5 in their season opener last Wednesday. The game started slow, as it was the first game for both teams, but picked up in pace after the first goal was scored by Shelby Peltier with exactly 10 minutes left in the first half. Hartford quickly rallied, scoring three goals in one minute, giving them a 3-1 lead. Brynn Fabian and Peltier each scored one more, along with Hartford, as the teams went into halftime 4-3. The second half started slowly as well, with Hartford scoring first with 11:55 left in the second half. Kelsey Inzer found the net with 4:34 remaining followed by Fabian to tie the game with 3:07 left. S. Peltier finally clinched the game with 2:07 remaining on a free position. Strong defense was played by teammates Molly Harrness, Heather Surprenant and Hannah Scott, while midfield defenders Bridget Harty and Erika Smith worked hard to control the ball as well. Goalie Erica Weber made nine saves. Away at Montpelier Randolph traveled to Montpelier on Friday not knowing what to expect. They lost to the state runners-up twice last season, which left the Ghosts fairly hesitant. Once the game started, however, the Gal Ghosts never looked back as they defeated Montpelier 11-2. Peltier led the offense with five goals and an assist. Fabian contributed three goals, while Inzer added one to go along with her four assists. Abby Peltier and Sarah Kresock also added a goal apiece. Coming out of half time with a 6-0 lead, Randolph’s defense played an excellent game keeping the Solons scoreless until 5:10 remaining in the second half. The Solons scored one more a minute later, but the defense didn’t allow an offensive push and held the Solons at two. Teammates Maia Binhammer, Melissa Perkins, and Brook Sargeant had excellent games as well. It was strong midfield connections along with togetherness throughout the entire team that led to the Ghost victory. Weber had seven saves. At BFA-St. Albans The Ghosts traveled to BFA-St. Albans Saturday afternoon for their third game in four days. Things didn’t bode well for the Ghosts as BFA came out strong scoring two goals in the first three minutes. Slightly shaken and exhausted, Randolph thought they would be receiving their first loss of the season. With a time out called and some words by Coach Smith Banks, the Ghosts realized how much they wanted the win. It was a very physical game as BFA and Randolph both became more and more aggressive, and with Randolph ahead 6-4 at half time, it seemed both teams would do anything to win. In the end Randolph pulled off a 10-7 victory over BFA. Fabian scored four goals for Randolph and the Peltier sisters scored two each. Inzer and Smith both added a goal for Randolph as well. Weber had an excellent game with 19 saves. Away at Oxbow Randolph won its fourth straight game as they defeated Oxbow 22-4 on Monday. Randolph came out strong as Fabian scored the first goal in seven seconds. Scorers of the game included S. Peltier with five goals and one assist, Inzer with four goals and two assists, Fabian with three goals and one assist, A. Peltier with two goals and five assists, Sargeant with two, Kresock with two goals and an assist, and Harty, Javon Miller, Megan Reymore and Lacy Dezan each with a goal as well. The Ghosts’ defense played a strong game, only allowing four goals. The game allowed everyone on the team to play including Jenny Chase, Libby Crowe, Emiline Pellitier, Jenna Miller and Zoe Gaby-Smith, who was injured during the second half. Weber had 10 saves. The team played well and will host Lamoille at home on Thursday, May 3 and Sharon Academy on Tuesday, May 8. ____________ |
