The Lady Hornets opened the season against the D-III Williamstown Blue Devils last Friday in Bethel and claimed their first victory of the season, 12-6. The Hornets came out strong right from the get-go and led 5-0 after one, 5-2 after three, 7-2 after four, 10-4 after five and 10-4 after five before winning 12-6 after seven. Molly Taylor was on the mound for the Hornets and allowed no hits in the outing. Unfortunately she struggled some and hit three batters and walked 14. Taylor did a better job at the other end of the stick going 3-for-4 which included a triple. Maggie Eddy went 2-for-3 with a double and Emily Wright went 2-for-4, Tia McKenna and Chelsie Brown both had singles. Whitcomb’s coach Ray Colton is returning for his 10th year. D.H. vs. Craftsbury The Hornets traveled to Craftsbury for a double-header the very next day and returned to Bethel with a 3-0 record. In the first outing the Hornets had 18 hits and smacked their hosts 16-7. Doubles were the order of the day with Wright and Taylor getting two apiece and Eddy, Brown, Allison Richards and Emily Abbott each hitting one. Taylor also had five stolen bases. Craftsbury had only two hits in the game. Taylor pitched four innings and Emily Wright pitched one. In the nightcap the Hornets trounced the Chargers 16-2 and once again it was doubles action. Taylor had two and both Brown and Wright had one. Whitcomb swatted the ball for 15 hits while limiting Craftsbury to just two hits for the second time that day. Wright pitched the five-inning game and had six strike-outs and eight walks. N.H. Game The Hornets traveled to Orford, N.H. on Monday and fell to their hosts 6-1. Whitcomb took the early lead against the Raptors in the fourth inning when a Virginia Wortman single RBI’d Brown who had walked to get on. The Raptors tied the game in the bottom when Penny Mitchell scored off a suicide-squeeze bunt by Brooke Maddock. The Hornets were in position to add to their score in the fifth when Brittany Washburn stole second and third, but was tagged at the plate off third baseman Penny Mitchell’s fielded ball on the next play. Rivendell responded in the bottom of the fifth when Samantha Fulford hit a two-run triple to get the lead and Shelby Brooks singled and RBI’d Lindsay Carter in the sixth. Gillian Suich allowed three hits and three walks and struck out 11 for Rivendell. Taylor had two hits, walked eight and struck out four in the contest for Whitcomb. Both teams are 3-1 currently. Loss to SoRo The road-weary Hornets fell 15-0 to the D-III Royals in South Royalton just one day after losing to Rivendell. Five games in four days proved to be too much as Whitcomb couldn’t make it past second base. The Royals batted through the line on the way to a 7-0 first inning. Whitcomb utilized Taylor, Wright, and Wortman on the mound. Whitcomb faces the West Rutland Golden Horde today and then plays the Rochester Rockettes Monday, May 7 and the Cabot Huskies Tuesday at 4:30. All three games are in Bethel. ____________ |
