Richard Bannister

HANCOCK—Richard Morris Bannister, 82, of Hancock, died early Sunday morning, April 29, 2007, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

He was born Feb. 14, 1925, in Newport, N.H., the son of Miland and Irene (Boutwell) Bannister. He attended school in Stockbridge, and graduated from Rochester High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, and married Eula Goodyear in Bristol in 1946. They would have celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on May 1.

He lived in Stockbridge until 1939, then Sunapee, N.H., until 1942, moving to Hancock after military service, where he had lived ever since. He worked at Weyerhauser in Hancock for 38 years, retiring as supervisor in 1984. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and writing poetry.

He had served the town of Hancock on the selectboard and school board, and as road commissioner. He was a cook at the Granville School for 10 years, and was a member of the Rochester Masonic Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Community Church of Hancock-Granville.

Survivors include his wife, Eula Bannister of Hancock; a son, Gary Bannister of Mendon; two daughters, Susan Miller of Vernon and Gail Tidd of Hancock; a brother, Norman Pratt of Rochester; three sisters, Dorothy Merrill of Danworth, N.H., Linda Jones of West Ossipee, N.H., and Margaret Norris of Newport, N.H.; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, May 3, at 11 a.m. at the Community Church of Hancock-Granville, with Rev. Wayne Holsman and Rev. Floyd Frisch officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Hancock Village Cemetery. Calling hours and Masonic Rites took place Wednesday night at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.
