Rani Arbo & Daisy Mayhem
In Wellspring Benefit at BOH On Friday, April 6 at 7:30 p.m., the 14th Annual Wellspring School Spring Concert will bring Rani Arbo & Daisy Mayhem to the stage of the Barre Opera House. One of the most innovative string bands on the circuit today, "this quartet has a rare gift for fashioning hip, sleek sounds from the solid cloth of vintage American music" according to The Boston Globe. Opening for the band are Anne and Pete Sibley of Jackson, Wyo., a couple who are quickly becoming the west’s hottest duo. Tickets are available by calling the Barre Opera House Box Office at 802-476-8188. Proceeds will benefit the Wellspring School’s financial aid program Popular all over the East Coast, Rani Arbo & Daisy Mayhem are known for their expressive singing and seamless harmonies. Their influences range from Doc Watson to Django Reinhardt, from traditional Ghanaian drumming to the funky Meters, and from old-time fiddler Tommy Jarrell to British songwriter Nick Drake. While they can (and do) play some of their repertoire "straight up," their forte is in mixing and matching styles to create a bracing fusion—much of which is improvised on the spot. In the course of one show, for example, you might hear a pre-Civil War song from the Georgia Sea Islands backed up by blues guitar and a New Orleans-style groove. Or, perhaps, an old Irish fiddle tune with brand-new lyrics, capped with a solo on a South American box drum. Or, an original song accompanied by a Cajun fiddle riff and an African-influenced groove. First inspired by duet performers like Tim and Mollie O’Brien and Gillian Welch and David Rawlins, the Sibleys began performing at a local hootenanny. Since that time, Anne has grown as a songwriter, performing tightly written songs that tell a good story. The duo has a flair for breathing life into old favorites. Accompanied by guitars and Pete’s melodic claw hammer banjo, their harmonies are stunning and they have recorded three CDs. ____________ |
