‘Save Our School’ Comm.

Will Meet in Hancock

By Martha Slater

Calling itself the "Save Our School Committee of Hancock and Granville," a group has organized and will meet this Sunday, March 25 from 11:30-2:30 p.m. at the Hancock campus of the Village School.

During the Hancock and Granville Town Meetings earlier this month, the school budgets approved by voters in both towns were not enough to keep either the Hancock or Granville schools open in the way they are currently operated. The committee was formed by a group of people who feel the two schools should remain open.

According to a letter sent to community members March 19, the committee plans to submit petitions to the school boards in each town to revisit the articles that determine the school budget. The petitions will necessitate calling a new Town Meeting in both towns.

This week’s letter noted that at these meetings, the committee members hope that the school board, with assistance from them, will offer the townspeople ideas for supplemental funding. This could include possible benefactors, reduced programs, reduced teachers’ pay, grants, state and national funding, and other ideas generated by the committee.

Sunday’s meeting will be a potluck, so those attending are asked to bring a dish to share. Beverages, dishes and silverware will be provided. For more information about the committee, call Mary Sue Crowley at 767-3958 during the day or 767-3595 in the evening; or Amy Braun at 767-9868 in the evening.
