By Laurie-Jean B. Gauthier

Former Whitcomb Hornet Sarah Chap recently completed her collegiate career with the Norwich University Cadets women’s basketball program playing in the "Big Dance" in the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Tournament. The Cadets reached the NCAA tournament with an at-large bid after losing to Emmanuel College 63-55 in the finals of the GNAC Tournament.

Norwich defeated Simmons College and Suffolk University in the quarter-finals and the semifinals, 54-37 and 56-46, respectively, to reach the finals and Chap made a solid contribution in those efforts. Against Simmons she scored eight points, made 13 rebounds and had three blocked shots while against Suffolk she scored 11 points. Chap had a double-double in the finals with 11 points and 14 rebounds and was named to the GNAC All-Conference Team.

While at Whitcomb Chap was a four year varsity player and starter who scored 967 points and made 1,011 rebounds. Named captain her senior year, Chap also was named to the All-Star Team that year. At Norwich she has amassed some impressive stats as well as having been a prominent presence (a 6’3" center and post player) on the court.

As a freshman, Chap played in 29 games and averaged 5.3 points and 3.1 rebounds per game and led the Cadets with 27 blocked shots. In her sophomore season she played in all 30 games and averaged 3.6 points and 3.4 rebounds per game and was second on the team with 19 blocked shots.

As a junior, Chap started in all 30 games and averaged 8.8 points and 6.6 rebounds per game and led her team in rebounds and blocked shots. She made 197 rebounds and made 28 blocked shots, and was also named a tri-captain that season and earned distinction being named to the All-GNAC 3rd Team as well as the GNAC All-Tournament Team. She completed her junior season with a trip to the NCAA D-III 2006 tournament where Norwich posted a 76-63 win over Maine-Farmington in the opening round and bowed out in the second round with a 72-42 loss to Southern Maine.

This season as a senior Chap is once again a tri-captain and started in all 28 games. She is second averaging 9.9 points per game, but leads Norwich with 8.2 rebounds per game and has 49 blocked shots. Chap is third in steals with 23, and was tops in rebounding for Norwich in seven games this past season and was game high scorer in three games. Chap was named the GNAC Player of the Week one time during the season. After the regular season she was named to the GNAC All-Conference 2nd Team.

Chap finished her career last Saturday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball 2007 Tournament where the Norwich Cadets fell to the Fitchburg State College Falcons 79-60. In the final game of her college career Chap scored 14 points. Well done Sarah, well done.
