In last week's newspaper you wrote a story that included information about my mommy and daddy, Gus Howe Johnson and Justin Johnson, and how they met. I wanted to tell you that you got some things a little wrong. My mom, who grew up in Randolph, has never been an exchange student in Australia. She met dad in America. In 1993 my mom was editor of Maryland Farmer newspaper, and the company that owned it, Rural Press USA, moved her up to New England Farmer newspaper, and hired daddy, who had worked for Rural Press Ltd in Australia, to replace Mom in Maryland. Daddy came to America because his dad had lived here for a long time and he wanted to live here too. The first time Daddy called Mommy, was when he said "I'm the bloke that is taking over your newspaper, do you have any advice for me?" and she gave him some advice for Maryland Farmer newspaper. Mom says he didn't follow that advice. But the next year when Rural Press USA moved Daddy up to New York Farmer newspaper, Mom taught him how to drive in the snow and how awesome maple syrup is, and they were friends. They got married in Victoria, Australia about a year after that. In 1997 they moved to Australia where my brother and I were born, and we moved back to Randolph in 2001. We like living in Randolph. And that's the real story. By the way, in our house, we are all Australian citizens and we are all American citizens. We are very proud of that. Hannah Johnson, 8 Randolph |
