Rochester had a classic Town Meeting Monday night. It opened with an update by Sandy Haas, our state representative, who had prepared a handout on the current legislation in the House. Two very qualified citizens were elected to the Selectboard. Norm Pratt brings years as a selectman and town moderator, as well as a variety of business experience to the Board. Doon Hinderyckx is a village resident and business owner who brings fresh ideas and relative youth to the Board. With Larry Straus, the present chair, this is a strong board with a wealth of experience. We now have a solid library trustee board and a good roster of citizens taking on the other key town positions. With some good questions and discussion of the capital expenditures and the appropriations, the budget was passed. Rochester narrowly passed the impeachment resolution after two excellent and rational presentations by Marv Harvey and Bruce Marshall. Like most small Vermont towns, Rochester is looking ahead to some major issues of capital equipment replacement expenditures, a new firehouse, CLA and reappraisal issues, bridge replacements. With the kind of open-minded discussion observed at Town Meeting and the talent that is in place, Rochester, and its volunteers in and out of government, is well prepared for the future. If Washington could be as civil, logical, non-political and decisive, the world would be a better place and democracy would be alive and well. Charlie Biederman Rochester |
