Compared to the school meeting, Chelsea’s annual town meeting was relatively uneventful. Voters approved an amended amount of $424,858 to carry on the business of the town, almost unanimously by voice vote. The town also voted to place $50,000 in the town garage reserve fund, bringing that fund to $146,536. Facilities committee member Alan Ackerman said that the committee has recently reviewed plans of six other towns that have recently built garages. Further, the committee feels their recommendation will probably be to build the town garage at or next to the Heath Field—where the town sand pile and water treatment plant reside. The following appropriations were also approved: Chelsea Public Library, $19,000; Chelsea Cemeteries maintenance and support, $7,500; First Branch Ambulance Service operating expenses, $15,000; Chelsea Historical Society, $1,000. Fifteen other local organizations also received funds totaling $13,230. Harry Flint was elected to the select board for a three-year term to replace Dick Rogers, who declined re-election. Other town officers elected include: Town Treasurer, Jane Cushman; Lister, Chris Allen; Delinquent Tax Collector, Jane Cushman; Auditor, Jack Johnson; Auditor, Dwayne Adams; First Constable, Nolan LaFrancis; Trustee of Public Money, David Bradshaw; Cemetery Commissioner, Brian Sanborn; Library Trustee, Casey Peterson; Grand Juror, Ernest Kennedy; Town Agent, William Field Voters also approved a measure to give a two percent discount on taxes that are paid within 30 days of the mailing of the tax bill. Taxes to become due on Thursday, Nov. 1, with the delinquent taxes having interest charges of one percent per month and an eight percent penalty charged from the due date. |
