Correction In Granville Letter

I wish to rectify some of the figures I quoted in my last week’s letter. Somehow I skipped over the fine print stating the 80% CLA was already factored into the tax rates quoted in the Village School handout. My apologies.

The Granville municipal budget came in at an 8% increase instead of 10%.

The closing of the Granville school will actually result in a decrease over last year’s education tax for Granville.

The proposed Granville 2007-2008 school district budget for the upcoming Town Meeting is $872,549. It will reflect a 50/50 split with the Hancock school district. The tax rate for his amount is 1.589 which will result in an increase of several hundred dollars over last year’s taxes—in my case, $900.

Although money is certainly a factor in a decision to close the Granville School, the declining student enrollment plays a significant part. In the 2003-2004 school year there were 26 students in grades one through six. Next year’s projected enrollment is 12 students in grades one through six with none coming in kindergarten.

With only one or two students per grad some of us feel that despite transportation issues, these few children would have something to gain socially and academically y having the chance to interact with a larger, more diverse school population outside of Granville.
