WINTER HAVEN, FLA. — Dorothy Florence Plumb Bent, 86, formerly of Braintree Hill, died February 5, 2007, at Heart of Florida Hospital, Haines City, Fla., after a brief illness. She was the eighth of 12 children born to Harold Edgar Wellington Plumb and Florence Vernette Hicks. She was an honors graduate of Springfield High School in Springfield in 1938 and earned her BA from the University of Massachusetts in 1942, and her master’s degree from the University of Vermont in 1968. In 1944, she married Allen Emery Bent in Independence, Kans., while he was serving as a flight instructor in the Army Air Corps. After the war, she worked as a 4-H County Agent in both Vermont and New York, and as a Home Demonstration Agent. In 1963, she represented the State of Vermont as "Mrs. Vermont" at the national pageant in Florida. She also taught English and home economics in Vermont schools, before moving to Winter Haven in 1973. She worked for many years as a real estate agent for Action Realty of Winter Haven, retiring in 2006. She was an active member of the Ponce de Leon Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She traced her lineage to five passengers on the Mayflower, including John Alden and Richard Warren. As an active member of the Edward Fuller Colony of Mayflower Descendants in Polk County, she served many years as historian and also held State Offices and served the General Society of Mayflower Descendants as Assistant General representing Florida at the General Society Meetings. She was a member of the Stephen Hopkins Chapter Daughters of the American Colonists of Lake Wales, Fla. She served the Winter Haven community as a member of the Winter Haven Chamber of Commerce, and was politically involved as a poll worker. Survivors include four sons: Kim Allen Bent, David Emery Bent, Douglas Gene Bent, and Robert Arnold Bent; her daughter Cynthia Lee Bent; eight grandchildren: Tammy Lyn Bent-Benjamin, Todd Allen Bent, Lisa Marie Bent, Heather Ann Bent, Rachel Lynn Bent, Genie Lee Bent, Adam Allen Bent, and Ian Arthur Bent; and three great-grandchildren: Taylor Jane Benjamin, Shavonna Bent, and Seth Allen Bent. She is also survived by her brother, Donald Harold Plumb and his wife Judith Bradford Loring of Rockville, Md.; sisters, Alta Amanda Plumb Slack of Marietta, Ohio, and Marion Gertrude Plumb Landers of Winter Haven, Fla.; and sisters-in-law Sarah Barker, Thelma Stocker, Jeanette Routhier, and Joan Muriel Pressey. She was predeceased by her parents, Harold and Florence; her husband, Allen; brothers, Murray, Howard, Ralph, Robert, Kenneth, Francis, and Clayton; and a sister, Charlotte E. Plumb Weatherhead; and her first child, Betty Jean Bent, who died in 1948.
