Gal Ghosts Split Week
By Jill D. Montgomery

The Randolph Gal Ghosts defeated Mt. Abe at home last Thursday, 36-30, and then lost to Lamoille, away Tuesday night, 65-41, after staying close to the Lancers for the first half of the game. The Ghosts’ record is now 7-11.

Lamoille Lancers

The Randolph girls didn’t let Lamoille’s 15-1 record bother them as they came out fighting in Tuesday’s away game. The Lancers led 8-1, before Arielle Connolly finally put in a floor shot for Randolph at the 3:56 mark. Sharayah Nonemacher and Emily Howe added baskets in the first as well, but the Lancers held a slim 10-7 edge after the opening period of the game.

Lamoille led off the second quarter with a hoop, but Brynn Fabian matched that with a drive up court for two points. After two freebies from Lamoille, Fabian came back with a shot from downtown to bring the Ghosts within two, 14-12.

The Lancers and Gal Ghosts continued to swap shots, with Randolph hoops coming from Shelby Peltier and Howe. Lamoille pulled away by seven, 23-16, before Connolly ended their streak with an inside shot. Howe and Fabian ended the half going toe-to-toe with the Lancers with Lamoille ending the half ahead, 24-22.

The Lancers again started a quarter with the first basket but Randolph’s Connolly and Howe quickly tied the game, 26-26, with back-to-back hoops. This pretty much ended the close portion of the contest as the Lancers kicked it into a whole new game.

Lamoille scored 20 points in the third quarter and 21 in the fourth to put the game out of reach. The Lancers used a combination of inside and outside shooting with their treys hitting from way beyond the arc. The high scorers for the Lancers were #13 Rachel Wellman with 19 and #14 Cory Palumbo with 11 points.

Howe and Fabian led Randolph’s scoring with 9 points each, Connolly added 8, Peltier 7, Nonemacher 4, Lyndsey Smith had a trey and Kelsey Higgins added 1. Howe also had 10 rebounds. Gwen Reis was out with a hip bruise.

Win over Mt. Abe

The Mt. Abe Eagles came down to Randolph last Thursday and left with a six-point loss, 36-30.

The first quarter of last Thursday’s game was slow but the Gal Ghosts led 8-5 by the end of the first. The Eagles came back and outscored Randolph 10-3 in the second with the Ghosts’ lone hoop coming from a three-pointer from Ashley Chase. The Gal Ghosts did have good rebounding throughout the game but couldn’t seem to get the ball to fall for them in the first half. The Eagles headed into the locker room with a 15-11 edge.

The two teams were dead even in the third period with an addition of 6 points by both.

The Gal Ghosts brushed off their offense for the final quarter with a basket from Reis just 15 seconds into the fourth. The Eagles matched that and added another off a turnover, but Fabian nailed another one of her sweet shots from downtown to pull the Ghosts within three. A Howe hoop off a Fabian steal brought the score to 25-24, Eagles, before Mt. Abe pulled away with two buckets and a free throw.

The way back for Randolph was started by Andrea Chase, who hit a trey, followed by a jumper from Peltier and another trey from Fabian.

With time running out, the Gal Ghosts had earned the two-point edge, 32-30. The Eagles missed a foul shot and were forced to foul Fabian, who coolly hit both. Nonemacher scored off a put-back with just seconds on the clock.

Fabian led Randolph’s scoring with 12 points, Peltier added 7, Howe 4, the Chase twins, Ashley and Andrea each had 3, as did Reis; Connolly and Nonemacher each had 2. The rebounding was quite impressive with Reis grabbing 9, Nonemacher 8, Howe 7 and Peltier 5.

JV Games

The JV girls lost to Mt. Abe 48-32. The high scorers were Javon Miller with 8 and Shayne Reis with 6.

After a good comeback attack, the JV squad bowed out to Lamoille, 35-24. The top scorers were Shayne Reis, Javon Miller and Hannah Becker, each with 4 points.

The Gal Ghosts play Lyndon at home tonight, Feb. 8, which will be senior night and also the first of the big drawings for the blue and white raffle to benefit the Randolph Sports Boosters. The final regular season game will be away, Tuesday, Feb. 13, at U-32.
