Randolph Boys In Overtime Thriller
By Cody Montgomery

The Randolph boys’ basketball team played at home against Oxbow last Wednesday, and lost in overtime 59-55. Randolph’s game vs. Harwood at home last Friday was rescheduled to Monday, Feb. 12 due to weather.

Oxbow

The Randolph boys came out flat against the Olympians, who came out attacking the glass and forcing turnovers. The Ghosts couldn’t hit a shot in the first quarter, but even with the Olympians’ height advantage Randolph had all of their field goals scored in the paint. With 10 seconds to go, Thomas Jacobs scored on the offensive glass to cut the deficit to 10. Randolph trailed 19-9 after the first quarter.

Randolph’s defense woke up in the second quarter, as they forced consecutive turnovers by Oxbow. Kyle Connolly connected for one of his four three-pointers in the game to bring Randolph within five. With about five minutes left, and with a lead of six, the Olympians went on a 9-0 run to put themselves ahead by 15, their largest lead of the game. After a timeout however, Randolph calmed down on offense and started to sink some shots. Connolly hit another trey, Jon White drove to the basket and scored, and Ira Tillberg sunk a jumper from the elbow, bringing the Ghosts within eight at the end of the first half. Randolph trailed 32-24.

Like the second quarter, Randolph came out of the gates with some good ole’ defense that shut down the Olympians. After rejecting an Oxbow player’s shot with authority, Markus Farnham sank a three at the other end to start the offense for Randolph. Connolly also hit a trey after a steal at the other end to bring the Ghosts within two. Oxbow made a run to go up by 10. Connolly added another trey to bring Randolph within five, 45-40 at the end of the quarter.

After being down 50-44 in the fourth, Randolph played tough defense and forced Oxbow to give it up to White who went straight to the hoop and scored. Jacobs added another hoop in the paint, and Derek Riley scored off an offensive rebound to bring them within two. Jacobs, with about two minutes left, sank a jump-hook in the paint to tie the game at 50, and then off a Connolly steal scored again to put the Ghosts on top for the first time in the game. With 48 seconds left, the Olympians drove baseline and re-tied the game at 52.

There wasn’t much offense in the overtime period, but Oxbow scored on seven foul shots to win.

Jacobs led the way for Randolph scoring 18 points and getting seven rebounds. Fourteen of Jacobs points came in the second half and overtime. Connolly had 15 points, six rebounds, and five steals. White had 10 points, Farnham had five points and four blocks, Tillberg had three points, Riley had two points and six rebounds, and Cody Montgomery had two points and 11 rebounds off the bench. Randolph as a team had 22 steals against the Olympians. "We played okay, we came back from a big deficit. Cody Montgomery and Derek Riley came through for us off the bench and had a great game. We need to stop beating ourselves, and quit rushing things," said coach Bruce Viens after the game.

JV

The JV boys defeated oxbow 34-31, after leading 15-0 in the first quarter. Pat Lucenti had nine points, and Jason Hicks had seven points.
