Police Plan Must
Go To Public

The idea of expanding the police district to cover the entire town should not be a matter of "Is it the right thing to do?" or "Does it make sense?" It should rather be a matter of "Do the taxpayers whom it would affect and on whom it would be imposed want it?"

There are obviously pros and cons to expanding police coverage townwide, just as there are pros and cons to bringing a department of corrections work camp into town. Since the Selectboard has already said publicly that the work camp decision will be made by the voters, I'd like to encourage them to make the same public statement about expanding the police district.

Imposing what would be a considerable tax increase on roughly half of the town's registered voters without giving them the opportunity to vote on it is absolutely not the right thing to do, nor does it make sense.
