New Lucky’s Motor Sports Now Open
By Martha Slater

Walk through the doors of the new 9,600 sq. ft. Lucky’s Motor Sports building on Waterman Road in Royalton and the first thing you notice is the sheer size and sparkle of it all. The sunlight beaming down from windows cut high in the pair of cupolas that top the dark red building combines with the showroom lighting, reflecting off the chrome and bright colors on a gleaming and impressive expanse of motorized sports vehicles.

Owned by the same trio of Dimmicks (Lucky, Sharon and Russell) who also own Lucky’s Trailer Sales just down the road, Lucky’s Motor Sports began about five years ago as a motorcycle dealership. It expanded to include snowmobiles, dirt bikes, four-wheelers and related sports apparel, and outgrew its original quarters, which was in the same building as the trailer business.

Manager Ken Smith (known as "Smitty") says that walking into this new space, which opened a few days after Christmas, gives him a thrill every time.

"When I walk into this building, my heart races!" he says. "There’s quite a ‘wow!’ factor here. The trend in this business is to ‘be big or be gone,’ so we were faced with either sliding out of the industry or getting bigger. We’re committed to being here."

Smitty says he has been undismayed by the lack of snow up until recently this winter, since "it gave me time to get the showroom and service department up and running. Service is our mainstay. That’s where our emphasis is. We have an ambition to be the best service center in New England and I’ve had the time to lay the groundwork for that."

Noting that, right now, there are seven full-time employees and a part-time employee starts work this week, Smitty says that "by next year, we hope to have 12 or 13 people working here full-time."

In addition to all the motorized recreational vehicles they sell and service, Lucky’s also offers a complete line of Choko cold weather wear for men and women, and apparel from Skidoo and Yamaha, plus accessories and parts for the vehicles.

"We’re excited about this!" says Smitty, who is fond of saying that Lucky’s Motor Sports "sells ‘four seasons of fun.’ We’re also trying to make this a destination spot, so we’re planning to set up events year-round here and co-sponsor them with other local businesses and clubs."

A grand opening open house is also in the works for the near future.

Meanwhile, Smitty is definitely keeping busy and having fun.

"My goal is to get this businesses running so that I have time to be proactive," he concludes. "We’re looking forward to meeting and serving people throughout central Vermont."
