Vt. Photographer Peter Miller Talks About Vermont Trilogy

Vermont photographer and author Peter Miller will give a slide talk about his Vermont Trilogy: "Vermont People," "Vermont Farm Women" and "Vermont Gathering Places," Thursday, Feb. 8, at the Tunbridge Public Library. A book signing and refreshments will follow this free library Winter Evenings program.

Miller bills himself as an independent spirit who writes and photographs only what he wants, even if it’s to the detriment of financial security and relationships. He started taking photographs while in high school in Weston. A college photo internship led to his first publication and freelance work.

After training as an Army photographer, in 1955 Miller was assigned to Paris. In 1958, he joined LIFE magazine for four years as a reporter, before returning to Vermont. He founded and published Vermont Skiing magazine and contributed to SKI Magazine for 20 years. His first book was about the 1971 American ski team on the World Cup circuit.

Miller self-published "Vermont People" in 1990. In 1993 he started his Plains journey. It culminated in 1996 with "People of the Great Plains," which won four national awards. In 1999 he wrote "The First Time I Saw Paris" and in 2002, completed "Vermont Farm Women."

His "Vermont Gathering Places," commissioned by the Preservation Trust of Vermont, earned Miller the 2006 Vermonter of the Year award for his efforts to preserve the state’s culture.
