‘Disappearances’ Will Screen At Vershire Town Ctr. Feb. 3 Kingdom County Productions (KCP) has announced plans to show Jay Craven’s film, "Disappearances," Saturday, Feb. 3 in the Vershire Town Center, on the corner of Rte. 113 and Vershire Center Rd. The film showing will be at 7 p.m., following a wild game dinner, with seating at 5:30 p.m. Craven will talk and lead a dinner discussion. "Disappearances" stars Kris Kristofferson and Genevieve Bujold and is based on Howard Frank Mosher’s award-winning novel about whiskey-running in the 1930s. Other actors include Gary Farmer, William Sanderson, Lothaire Bluteau, Luis Guzman, Ken Winter and Charlie McDermott in his debut role. It completes a film trilogy of what Craven calls, "Vermont frontier films." Set during Prohibition, the film tells the story of Quebec Bill Bonhomme (Kristofferson), an impossible dreamer and schemer who needs fast cash after a freak lightning storm destroys his barn. Despite forebodings from his skeptical and mystical sister, Cordelia (Bujold), he hatches a plan to steal 20 cases of liquor from feral Canadian whiskey pirate, Caracjou (Bluteau), and smuggle it back across the Vermont-Canadian border. He takes along his 15 year-old-son, Wild Bill (McDermott), his inscrutable brother-in-law (Farmer), and his cranky hired man (Sanderson). Together, they cross the border into Canadian wilderness for three unforgettable days "full of terror, full of wonder." "Disappearances" was filmed in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom and the North Country of New Hampshire. It has been selected by the American Film Institute to be included as one of eight U.S. films and 11 international films that will tour venues throughout the world as part of the AFI: Project 20/20, jointly sponsored by the American Film Institute, National Endowment for the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities, President’s Commission on the Arts and Humanities, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. "Disappearances" played nearly 100 Vermont dates last summer. The film’s national release begins February 2 at the Brattle Theater in Cambridge, Mass. and will continue for the next year across the entire country.
