Lawrence E. Wood

CHELSEA—Lawrence E. Wood, 79, died unexpectedly January 22, 2007, at his home in Chelsea.

He was born May 2, 1927 in Royalton, the son of Elbert A. and Florence (Rogers) Wood. He attended school in Bethel, graduating in 1944 from Whitcomb High School. Upon graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II as a sea plane tender on the U.S.S. Kenneth Whiting.

On June 20, 1970, he married Beverly J. Hewitt. They lived most of their married life in Tunbridge, before moving to Chelsea in 1988. She died Sept. 30, 1992.

He had worked at the Chaffee Lumber Co. in Rutland for three years, Windsor County Grain & Feed Company in South Royalton for five years, Canter Construction Co. in Massachusetts for 12 years, and G.W. Plastics in Bethel for over 24 years, before retiring in 1993.

On July 19, 2001, he married his companion of nine years, Patricia Dimick of Williamstown.

He was a member of the N.R.A. and the Tri-Town Travelers Snowmobile Club. He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, watching horse pulling, attending fairs, collecting antiques and antique guns.

He is survived by his wife of Chelsea; two sons, Lawrence Wood Jr. and Jeff Wood, and three daughters, Judith Barnett, Joyce Sengewald and Teresa Wolnilzek, all of Cincinnati, Ohio; two step-daughters, Teresa Sweet of Thetford and Valerie Ferris of Tunbridge; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildfen; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was predeceased by a sister, Elsie Barnaby.

There are no public calling hours. A graveside funeral service will be held at the Branch View Cemetery in South Royalton Saturday, Jan. 27, at 2 p.m., with Rev. David L. Wolfe officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Tunbridge Recreation Assoc., in care of Ann Mallory, Treasurer, P.O. Box 6, Tunbridge, Vt., 05077. Arrangements are under the direction of the Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home on Main Street in Chelsea.
