RUHS Girls Lose 2 Close Games
By Jill D. Montgomery

It was cold outside and even colder inside last Thursday when the Randolph Gal Ghosts travelled to Harwood to play the Highlanders. Both teams’ offense was cold and the enthusiasm was even colder as the two teams played to a 6-5 first quarter.

The freeze hadn’t dissipated by halftime as the score read a surprising 13-11 Randolph edge—an unheard of score for the Division II level. Sharayah Nonemacher grabbed five steals in the second quarter, helping keep the Ghosts in the game.

The third quarter continued in the same vein with Randolph adding eight and Harwood six. The Gal Ghosts led, 21-17 at the end of three.

The Highlanders outscored Randolph 13-9 in the fourth period aided by eight Ghosts turnovers. The two teams stayed neck and neck with Randolph holding a four point edge, 28-24 with 3:22 on the clock.

Harwood tied the game 28-all and then reknotted the contest 30-30 with 10 seconds left in the game, and the contest headed into overtime.

The Highlanders came to life in the four-minute O.T. period but the Gal Ghosts didn’t. Harwood scored 16 points while the Ghosts’ offense stayed cold, giving Harwood the win.

Scoring for Randolph were Brynn Fabian with 8 points, Gwen Reis and Emily Howe each with 7, Shelby Peltier with 5, Lyndsey Smith 2 and Arielle Connolly 1. Peltier and Reis each had 9 rebounds and Nonemacher had 7 steals.

Loss to Solons

The Randolph girls went to Montpelier Saturday and took home a disappointing 37-35 loss.

The Gal Ghosts exhibited a much livelier style as well as playing a tough defense. Unfortunately Randolph’s two tallest players, Peltier and Reis, still battled with getting their shot to drop in the hoop.

Randolph and Montpelier matched hoop for hoop in the first and ended the period in a 7-7 tie. The Solons led 5-0 before Fabian and Reis put the Ghosts on the scoreboard. Fabian ended the quarter with a trey for the tie.

Randolph’s defense was outstanding in the second quarter and they held the Solons to just two points. Connolly came into the game and popped in a pretty jumper to start Randolph off.

Randolph ended the half with a 7-0 run and took a 16-9 edge at the half.

The Gal Ghosts continued their run in the beginning of the third, stretching that run to 11-0 and a 20-9 lead. Peltier also nabbed three rebounds in the opening minute.

The Solons came back with a 6-0 run, cutting the gap to five, before Reis scored from the top of the key. The rest of the third was all Montpelier as they first closed in on Randolph and then tied the game 24-24 to head into the final stanza.

Reis scored just eight seconds into the fourth quarter but Montpelier’s press began to give the Gal Ghosts big problems. The Solons, who had not been able to hit a foul shot all game, decided to make up for that and reknotted the contest, 28-28 from the charity stripe.

Kelsey Higgins accounted for another tie, 29-29 and Connolly hit a foul shot with 2:46 left in the game for yet another tie, 32-all. The Solons got ahead with a jumper and a freebie but Fabian came through again with a swisher from downtown for the final knot of the game, 35-35 with the time down to 6.7 seconds.

The Solons played the ball just right and put a basket in just as the buzzer went off for the two-point victory.

Randolph scorers were Fabian with 12 points, Reis with 8 points and 8 rebounds, Howe added 5 points, Peltier had 4 points and 8 rebounds, Connolly had 3 points, Nonemacher 2 and Higgins 1.

Before the game this reporter chatted with senior forward Rachel DiStefano, who has been out with a knee injury all season. DiStefano had her left knee operated on recently to repair a torn ACL. She has a brace on her knee and reports she is feeling much better but misses playing basketball.

The Ghosts have this week off for mid-terms and then play U-32 at home Saturday, Jan. 20, with J.V. starting at 2 p.m. and varsity following at 3:30. Randolph travels to Oxbow Tuesday, Jan. 23. The Gal Ghosts’ record is 4-7.

J.V. Games

The J.V. squad beat Harwood, 32-23. The high scorers were Heather Suprenaut and Javon Miller, each with 7 points.

The J.V. girls lost a close game to Montpelier, 32-26. Emily Beaudin led the scoring with 7 points.
