Tough Week for Lady Devils
By Mary Childs

The Lady Red Devils faced a busy week as they played three tough games in a row. Their first mach up was against the Rivendell Raptors last Thursday.

Facing a D-3 powerhouse, and former coach, the Raptors proved to be too much for the Devils. With Rivendell leading 23-9 at the half, the Lady Devils couldn’t close the gap. Rivendell took home the 46-21 win. Chelsea’s Jill Cray put up eight points and Robyn Kennedy added six.

Cabot Tournament

Chelsea’s next game was the opening round of the Cabot Tournament as they faced undefeated Canaan. Plagued by injuries, two of Chelsea’s key players sat the bench, leaving few substitutes. Canaan’s pressure and speed dominated and held the Chelsea Devils back.

Canaan advanced to the final round with a 66-28 win as Chelsea played Sharon in the consolation round.

Meeting up with Sharon for the third time this season the Chelsea girls were ready to defeat them. Previously, the Chelsea Devils squeaked by Sharon in their season opener. A couple weeks later Sharon defeated Chelsea by 19 points. This time it was Chelsea that came out on top with an impressive 43-21 win.

Chelsea came out strong with Cray and Lindsey Smith scoring eight unanswered points in the first minutes. The Chelsea defense picked it up forcing turnovers to work to their advantage. Chelsea led from minute one until the buzzer went off.

The Lady Devils’ strong defense held Sharon’s top scorer Zanna Pierce to just three points. Cray and Mary Childs were Chelsea’s high scorers with 11 points each. Chelsea improves to 5-5.
