SOUTH ROYALTON—Joan Mayer, 77, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007 at Gifford Memorial Hospital in Randolph.

Born in New York City and educated in the public schools, she earned her BA from Hunter College in 1950, and her Masters degree at the State University of New York in 1968. She taught junior and high school science in Rockland County, N.Y.; where she and the growing family lived from 1956-86. She and her husband traveled extensively through Europe, and the Middle and Far East.

After relocating in South Royalton in 1986, she became a member of the South Royalton Women’s Club, of which she served as President from 1994-96. She helped raise the funds that went to expand the South Royalton School Library.

As a member of the South Royalton Democratic Club, she was elected to serve as Justice of the Peace for several terms, and in August 2000 was selected as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles. A prized moment was meeting President Bill Clinton on Veteran’s Day 2000 at a White House breakfast.
