Hilda Stoddard GREENSBORO—Hilda Billings Stoddard, 82, died at the Greensboro Nursing Home January 14, 2007. She was born Hilda Ruth Billings December 28, 1924, on a hill farm in Rochester, the third child of Chester and Susan Billings. She was educated in the local schools of Rochester until going off to Castleton Normal School and beginning a career in teaching. One-room schools with all eight grades were her first assignments, in Sherburne, Barnard and Bethel. Later, she taught in Stockbridge and Rochester. She married Alison Stoddard of Bethel in 1946 and together they raised a family in Rochester. Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Alison Stoddard, of Craftsbury Common; three children: Linwood Stoddard of Springfield, Valerie Morrison of Craftsbury Common, and Lori Carter of Bensalem, Penna.; a foster daughter, Sandra Jesso Applegett of Westerville, Ohio; their spouses, Sharon Stoddard, Richard Morrison, Norman Carter, and Dave Applegett; 12 grandchildren: Eric Stoddard, Hope, Ethan, and Tad Morrison; Emilie, Bonnie, Jeremy, Philip, Benjamin, and Leah Carter; and Kelsey and Jenna Applegett; four siblings: Lois "Peggy" Stoddard of Lyndonville, James Billings of Rochester, Beth Murphy of Oldtown, Idaho; and Betty Morgan of Lancaster, Calif. Her family is proud of the legacy she leaves of photo albums, scrapbooks, and writings to chronicle both her life and her family’s history. A memorial service will be held in Rochester in the spring.
