G. Winston Ellis

WEST NEWBURY–G.Winston "Win" Ellis, 79, died January 2, 2007, at his home, with his wife Phyllis at his side. He was born in South Royalton April 14, 1927, the son of Clifford E. and Marjorie (Whitcomb) Ellis.

He served with the United States Navy during World War II, from 1945-46. He graduated with a B.S. in Engineering from the University of Vermont. He married Joanna Phyllis Manning December 18, 1954.

He worked as an electrical engineer for General Electric in Syracuse, N.Y. for 10 years and later at the research lab in Schenectady N.Y. for 25 years, before retiring in 1986. Some of his professional accomplishments include earning four patents and being involved in the developing of the CT Scan Imaging Machine for General Electric.

He served as an elder and trustee at the Liverpool, N.Y. Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Burnt Hill, N.Y. Methodist Church, were he sang in the choir. He was a member of the West Newbury Congregational Church, served on the music committee and sang in the choir. Locally, he was a member of the North Country Chorus. He was also involved with the delivery of the Meals on Wheels program in Orange County.

An accomplished musician, he played several instruments, including the piano, clarinet and saxophone. He played in several community big bands over the years, including being a member of the Catamounts at UVM. His love of music surrounded his family and has become an important part of their lives, also. He appreciated the time he could spend outside in the woods walking and enjoying nature.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Joanna Phyllis Ellis of West Newbury; two daughters, Joanna Wynne Ellis of Schyllerville, N.Y. and Barbara Maureen Ellis and husband, Jeffrey Hill, of Breckenridge, Colo.; two sons, Timothy Manning Ellis and wife, Rebecca Graber, of Brattleboro, and Stephen Winston Ellis and wife, Lisa of Goffstown, N.H.; a sister, Donna Rigby and husband, George, of Fairfax, Va.; a brother, Richard Ellis and wife Pauline of South Royalton; eight grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service was held at the West Newbury congregational Church Saturday, Jan. 6, with Rev. Cynthia Batten officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial con-tributions can be made to either the Lewy Body Dementia Association, P.O. Box 451429, Atlanta, Ga., 311145-9429 or the Organ Fund at the West Newbury Congregational Church, c/o Bea Putnam, West Newbury, Vt. 05085.

The Ricker Funeral Home of Woodsville, N.H. was in charge of arrangements.
