The royals are part of the MVL/CVL Challenge each year with Proctor, Black River, and Whitcomb. This year Proctor was the host at St. Joe’s College for the two night tourney. On Tuesday the 19th the Royals played Black River in the first game. The Royals showed up late and came out of the gate very flat. So flat that Black River doubled SoRo’s first quarter score and led 22-11 after the first buzzer. South Royalton never did get into a flow during the game, but after the dismal first they did hang with the Presidents for the rest of the contest. The second quarter was won by a slim Presidents margin 19-15, putting SoRo in a major hole 41-26 heading into the second half. In the third quarter the Royals kept pace with BR and the teams took turns trading baskets ending the quarter in a 14-14 tie, keeping the Royals down by 15 with just 8 minutes to go. The fourth quarter was more of the same as each team continued to take turns on the offensive side of the ball. The Presidents won by 18-16 to put the final tally, 73-56. The Royals captains Nick Enright and Pete Doyle-Braman led the team with 10 each while Tyrell Manning added 8. Rohria Bobby led BR with 30 points. Game 2 Two nights later the Royals were back at St. Joe’s College this time to face the hosts of the 2006 MVL/CVL Challenge, Proctor. This game was the exact opposite of the Black River contest. The Royals came out strong, had the lead and played with Proctor through three quarters, but in the fourth fell apart for a second straight loss. The Royals came out and had a 14-12 lead after the first 8 minutes of ball and then held their ground. SoRo let a few baskets drift the Phantoms way losing the second quarter 16-11 to give a one-possession lead to them at the break, 25-28. The third quarter was a very offensive quarter for both teams as they put up 37 points together with the Phantoms gaining another 3 points, 20-17, putting the score at 48-42 and giving the Royals a second straight game in which they were down with just 8 minutes left trying to mount a charge. This is where the game fell apart for SoRo as they were held to single digits in a quarter for perhaps the first time all year. The Royals were only able to put up six points and were held scoreless for the final 3:31 of the game. The Phantoms meanwhile added 13 to there total to put the final score at 61-48. Tyrell Manning led the way with 11 while Doyle-Braman added 8 for the Royals. Kyle Mequarrie led all scores with 17 for Proctor. Loss vs. West Rutland After the Christmas break the Royals hosted West Rutland on the 29th at the Royal Palace trying to get back to .500 after two straight losses placed them at 2-3 and also keep a spotless record at home. However, they failed to do both as SoRo again came out slow at the start of the game and thus took their third loss in a row. In the first quarter West Rutland went on a 7-0 run out of the gate and led 19-11 after one quarter. The Royals made a statement in the second quarter coming out and cutting the lead to six and holding West Rutland scoreless for the final 1:30 of the half. SoRo gained in the quarter, 17-15, putting the score at 34-28 at the break. The Royals after gaining momentum just before the break lost it all at the start of the 3rd quarter and never got it back as they lost the third 17-10 for a 51-38 hole with 8 to go. The fourth looked a lot like the third as the Royals tried to do too much and got sloppy with the ball losing the fourth by 6, 18-12 and the game by 19, 69-50. The Royals were led by Enright with 17 and Miles Ellis with 14. West Rutland’s Greg Hughes had 36 points and went 14-22 from the strip. The Royals (2-4) were at Hazen Tuesday night and go to Northfield on Thursday the 4th. ____________ |
