The Whitcomb Hornets’ boys basketball team is currently struggling in the early season and find themselves shy in the win column with a 0-4 record. Their season opening loss to Rochester (59-33) was followed by losses to TSA (45-32); Chelsea (78-45) and WBCS (59-57) respectively. In the TSA game at Sharon, Whitcomb was only down by one point at the half before the Phoenix came out and ran past the Hornets scoring 16 unanswered points in the 20-4 third period as they managed to take control of the game. Whitcomb did add an additional 20-plus points in the final quarter. In Bethel, the Chelsea game was more of the same only sooner rather than later. Trailing by six points after one, 16-10 the Hornets were stifled and buried in the second period as the Red Devils turned steals into hoops while limiting the Hornets to a six point deposit for a 40-16 half-time score. Red Devil Andrew Richardson finished with 12 points followed by Branden Emery with 10. In the Hornet’s best showing to date, it took three OTs before Whitcomb bowed out and lost by two points to Websterville. Whitcomb had double the points that Websterville had after one at 14 to 7 and led by eight at the break. A 17 to 8 run by WBCS in the third erased the Hornet lead and had the Crusaders up by one, 32-31. A tie at the buzzer after regulation extended the game into OT followed by a second tie/overtime before a third overtime had the Hornets down to four suits and Websterville up by two at the final whistle 59-57. The Hornets have had foul troubles since the start of the season and this game was no different as Whitcomb lost starter Deven Hill before the final buzzer. Hill and Brian Ward led the Hornets with 15 points each and Justin Rogler added 10, while Crusader Isaac Ranson led all scorers with the game high 30 points. The boys are currently participating in the CVL/MVL Challenge being played at the College of St. Joseph’s in Rutland. They played Proctor Tuesday and finish up tonight. Game time is 6 p.m. ____________ |
