Hoping to do better than last year (a disappointing 5-16 record), the Whitcomb Lady Hornets are gearing up for the upcoming basketball season sans Mindy McKenna, Kelsey Hill and Courtney Brown Whitcomb returns four and adds six to the varsity squad and welcomes nine to the junior varsity roster. Varsity coach Tim Perreault and junior varsity coach Gary Zisselsberger couldn’t be happier. Returning for their fourth and final season are senior forwards Tracy Zisselsberger and Chelsie Brown. Whitcomb guards are Molly Taylor and Demi Aldrighetti and up from the junior varsity squad are forwards Emily Wright, Brittany Washburn and Tia McKenna. New to the squad are junior forward transfer and former Red Devil Laurel Adams, senior guard Maggie Eddy and junior forward Kristi Bonnell. Returning for his ninth season Coach Perreault is happy with the core group of returning players and excited about the new girls that have joined the team. He is most excited about the fact that the number of players he has will enable him to run the defensive plays at practices, something that he hasn’t been able to do with the small size of the team in recent past years. Quickness and experience are his team’s best traits he feels, while getting the team to be consistent in scoring is their greatest weakness. Aside from the desire to reach the "AUD" he hoped that the girls will "bring a higher level of play to the court" and possibly he might just be thinking…the "AUD." Gary Zisselsberger has a group of fresh faces playing under his guidance with most having little or no game experience. Some have never played. Some haven’t played since sixth grade. Some are returning to the basketball program after participating in cheerleading for two years. Only three are coming up from the junior high program. The girls open the season against the Rochester Rockettes at VTC on December 9 in the annual Stun Stearns Bean Pot Classic. The junior varsity game starts at 6 p.m. and the varsity game follows at 7 p.m. ____________ |
