Strafford Sends Its Herald Correspondent to Mexico It did not seem financially possible for the Herald’s Strafford correspondent, John Freitag, to be able to make the trip to Mexico to see his new grandchild when his daughter Rosie’s baby was three weeks late and his wife, Lisa, ended up extending her stay for an extra month. That is until his school colleagues, friends, and neighbors decided to chip in and buy him a ticket so he could meet his first grandchild, Mallku Diaz. Amy Huyffer sent out an email announcing the fundraiser, and Ingrid Webb made donations cans for the school and Coburn’s General Store. In a few short days the money was raised and the ticket purchased. Freitag was totally stunned, pleased, and grateful. Then, Coburn Store proprietor, Melvin Coburn, who is good at bringing people down to earth, told Freitag that some of the biggest contributions came from people he told that it would be a one-way ticket! Meanwhile, high up in the mountains of Chiapas, Mexico in the town of San Cristobal de las Casas Freitag reports that his grandchild (like those of every grandparent) is "the most beautiful in the world." He also passes on his sincere thanks to all who made this once in a lifetime experience possible. ____________ |
