Elizabeth Smoot

RANDOLPH—Elizabeth "Betty" Smoot, 86, formerly of Rochester, died Saturday, November 18, 2006 at Menig Extended Care Facility in Randolph where she had lived since 2002.

She was born April 22, 1920 I Barrington, R.I. the daughter of Charles W. and Althea (Mayor) Jencks.

She attended Rhode Island Schools and graduated from Brown University in Providence, R.I., in 1940. During WW II, she served with the US Navy at the Alameda (Calif.) Naval Air Station as an Aviation Machinist Mate 3rd class.

She married George Smoot December 22, 1944 in California. Following their discharges, the Smoots moved to New Jersey where they raised their sons. She then returned to school, earning her Master’s Degree from Glassboro College in 1971. She taught English and became Department Chairman in Glassboro, N.J., retiring in 1982. The Smoots moved to Rochester in 1982. She enjoyed traveling and making clothes for her Barbie doll collection. She was a charter member of the Green Mountain Girls, Vermont Unit #113.

Survivors include her sons: Andrew Smoot of Urbana, Mo. And Lee Smoot of Brookhaven, N.J. She was predeceased by her husband, and her sisters, Dorothy and Marjorie.

Memorial services will be held at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph Center at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Day Funeral Home of Randolph.
