As a former recipient of VSAC college scholarships—one who has returned to my community after college—I am appalled at all the finger pointing about the "brain drain." "Brain drain" doesn't occur because students go to schools in other states; it occurs because there aren't jobs to support the return of post-college students. VSAC doesn't hand out enough money to make or break college-choice decisions for most students, so changing the VSAC disbursement regulations to cover only Vermont schools will not alleviate the "brain-drain" problem. What we need are more post-college level jobs to draw more college graduates to our state. Support of small-business growth is a good place to start. Stop bothering a program that helps Vermont families of college-age students. Erica Blomquist Bethel |
