A Congress, a Supreme Court, and an executive branch all dominated by self-styled "conservatives" have given us control of the national agenda by huge corporations, political corruption that's kept the Congressional ethics committees in overdrive, an ill-defined war in Iraq with no exit strategy, and the erosion of human and civil rights right here in our own country. Concerning the Bush administration's ongoing search for loopholes in the Geneva Conventions, Rich Tarrant recently said we shouldn't kid ourselves that Osama Bin Laden and regimes like Iran's are sitting around worrying about the Geneva Conventions, because they'd sooner chop off our heads as look at us. Well, jeezum crow, Rich, are you seriously suggesting that Osama Bin Laden or extremist clerics in Iraq be allowed to set the human rights standard that America has to live down to? 'Cause it sounds to me an awful lot like that's what you said. Bernie Sanders, for his part, has given us advocacy for the poor, for veterans, for farmers, for affordable health care and prescription drug access. He's consistently and publicly opposed international terrorism even as he has consistently and publicly exposed extremism in the Bush administration. Meanwhile, back here at home, the door of his office has always been open to constituents needing help, and no constituent was ever too small. If we Vermonters are thinking persons with any kind of memory at all, I don't see why Sanders shouldn't win in a landslide on Nov. 6. Get out there and vote! Peggy Whiteneck East Randolph |
